SECTION IV - FIRE & EXPLOSION HAZARD DATA

FLASH POINT: 410o to 475o F METHOD USED: FLAMMABLE LIMITS:
EXTINGUISHING MEDIA: Spray foam, dry chemical, CO2 –Do not use water.
SPECIAL FIRE FIGHTING PROCEDURES: Class ‘B’ fire ---avoid breathing fumes
EXPLOSION POTENTIAL: (1) Potential of dust explosion or ignition does exist with finely divided solids when the concentration reaches the right level. (2) Burn point-475o to 530o F material will "Sputter" when superheated and mixed with water.

SECTION V - HEALTH HAZARD DATA

PRIMARY ROUTE(S) OF ENTRY: EFFECTS OF OVEREXPOSURE (EO) OR FIRST AID (FA):
INHALATION: Could irritate the respiratory channels. Avoid breathing fumes from molten pitch.

Provide ventilation to control exposure levels below air exposure limits.

Use NIOSH approved dust & fume respirators

If overcome by dust or fumes, move person to fresh air.

Get medical assistance

INGESTION: Could cause irritation to digestive tract. Dust from powder should be avoided

Get medical assistance

SKIN: Danger of liquid causing thermal burn and solidifying on skin.

Dust may irritate skin.

-Treat for burn injuries. Cool are immediately with water. Do not attempt to remove material from 2nd & 3rd degree burns. Use solvents to remove from minor 1st degree burns. See doctor.

-Wash dust off with soap and water. See doctor.

EYE: Could cause eye irritation, abrasion and redness

Wear chemical safety goggles or glasses with side safety shields.

Flush eye with large amounts of clean water

Avoid rubbing eyes to lessen abrasion of surface

Get medical assistance

GENERAL FIRST AID: Treatment for burn injuries: Do not attempt to remove solidified pitch from 2nd or 3rd degree burns. Do not use solvents, use vegetable or mineral oil with doctor approval to remove pitch from minor 1st degree burns. Get medical assistance.

SECTION VI - SPILL, LEAK & DISPOSAL

  1. Parental guidance, supervision and participation required,
  2. Use a non-dust generating method to clean-up: a vacuum cleaner or disposable damp clothes or rags.
  3. Allow liquid state to solidify, then scrape up solids.
  4. Disposal: Incinerate, or bury in a landfill licensed to receive industrial waste
  5. Disposal should be in accordance with Federal, State and Local regulations

SECTION VII - SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION

  1. Parental guidance, supervision & participation required if material is to be heated, soften, melted and/or hot forming is being performed. Children and others could suffer major burns.
  2. Have a dry chemical fire extinguisher available in the immediate area if heating, softening and/or melting the material.
  3. Work in a well ventilated area.
  4. Do not breath vapors if heating material. A cover should be over the melting pot and an exhaust hood should be used.
  5. Use safety glasses with side shields.
  6. Use a NIOSH approved respirator if dust, particulate and/or fumes exceed the regulatory limit.
  7. Use a non-dust generating method to clean-up: a vacuum cleaner or disposable damp clothes or rags.

SECTION VIII - SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS & COMMENTS

  1. Parental guidance and supervision is mandatory and special attention and help is required if the material is being heated, soften, melted and/or hot formed. Children and others could suffer major burns. Keep material out of reach of children.
  2. Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practices. These practices include but are not limited to avoiding unnecessary exposure & removal of the material from eyes, skin and clothing.
  3. Avoid breathing fumes from molten pitch. Use a well ventilated area. A cover should be over melting pot & an exhaust hood used.
  4. Have a dry chemical fire extinguisher close to the area when heating pitch.
